Fine aluminum powder vs. coarse aluminum powder: How to choose correctly in industrial applications?

In industrial production, the particle size of aluminum powder directly determines its physical and chemical properties. Choosing the wrong specification may lead to product failure or even cause safety incidents. 

Fine aluminum powder (usually referring to particle size smaller than 50 microns) has an extremely large specific surface area and very high reactivity. It is mainly used in fields that require high gloss and coverage, such as metallic coatings, automotive paints, and printing inks, producing a delicate "silver shimmer" effect. In addition, in fireworks manufacturing and solid rocket propellants, fine aluminum powder becomes a core fuel due to its fast burning speed and high heat release. However, it should be noted that the dust explosion risk of fine aluminum powder is extremely high, and the explosion-proof requirements for the production environment are very strict.

Coarse aluminum powder (particle size usually larger than 50 microns) has relatively stable chemical properties and a slower reaction rate. It is more often used in refractory materials, aerated concrete foaming agents, and some anti-corrosion primers. In scenarios that require slow hydrogen release or serve as a structural filler, coarse aluminum powder becomes advantageous due to its low cost, high safety, and high bulk density.

When selecting, first clarify the application scenario: choose fine powder for optical effects and rapid reactions, and choose coarse powder for structural filling, slow reactions, and cost control. At the same time, safety regulations must be followed: operations with fine powder require dust removal and explosion-proof systems, and although coarse powder is relatively safer, routine dust protection should not be ignored. Only by "tailoring to the situation" can the value of aluminum powder be fully realized.
